Matthew 4:18-22 (CEB)
18As Jesus walked alongside the Galilee Sea, he saw two brothers, Simon, who is called Peter, and Andrew, throwing fishing nets into the sea, because they were fishermen. 19“Come, follow me,” he said, “and I’ll show you how to fish for people.” 20Right away, they left their nets and followed him. 21Continuing on, he saw another set of brothers, James the son of Zebedee and his brother John. They were in a boat with Zebedee their father repairing their nets. Jesus called them and 22immediately they left the boat and their father and followed him.

Matthew 22:1-10 (CEB)
1Jesus responded by speaking again in parables: 2“The kingdom of heaven is like a king who prepared a wedding party for his son. 3He sent his servants to call those invited to the wedding party. But they didn’t want to come. 4Again he sent other servants and said to them, ‘Tell those who have been invited, “Look, the meal is all prepared. I’ve butchered the oxen and the fattened cattle. Now everything’s ready. Come to the wedding party!” ’5But they paid no attention and went away—some to their fields, others to their businesses. 6The rest of them grabbed his servants, abused them, and killed them.
7“The king was angry. He sent his soldiers to destroy those murderers and set their city on fire. 8Then he said to his servants, ‘The wedding party is prepared, but those who were invited weren’t worthy. 9Therefore, go to the roads on the edge of town and invite everyone you find to the wedding party.’ 10“Then those servants went to the roads and gathered everyone they found, both evil and good. The wedding party was full of guests.

John 1:14
(The Message)
The Word became flesh and blood,
and moved into the neighborhood.
We saw the glory with our own eyes,
the one-of-a-kind glory,
like Father, like Son,
Generous inside and out,
true from start to finish.

Deuteronomy 6:1-9 (New International Version)
1These are the commands, decrees and laws the LORD your God directed me to teach you to observe in the land that you are crossing the Jordan to possess, 2 so that you, your children and their children after them may fear the LORD your God as long as you live by keeping all his decrees and commands that I give you, and so that you may enjoy long life. 3 Hear, Israel, and be careful to obey so that it may go well with you and that you may increase greatly in a land flowing with milk and honey, just as the LORD, the God of your ancestors, promised you.
4 Hear, O Israel: The LORD our God, the LORD is one.[a] 5 Love the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength. 6 These commandments that I give you today are to be on your hearts. 7 Impress them on your children. Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up. 8 Tie them as symbols on your hands and bind them on your foreheads. 9 Write them on the doorframes of your houses and on your gates.

Matthew 11:28-30 (Common English Bible)
28“Come to me, all you who are struggling hard and carrying heavy loads, and I will give you rest. 29Put on my yoke, and learn from me. I’m gentle and humble. And you will find rest for yourselves. 30My yoke is easy to bear, and my burden is light.”

1 Peter 2:19-25 (Common English Bible)
19Now, it is commendable if, because of one’s understanding of God, someone should endure pain through suffering unjustly. 20But what praise comes from enduring patiently when you have sinned and are beaten for it? But if you endure steadfastly when you’ve done good and suffer for it, this is commendable before God. 21You were called to this kind of endurance, because Christ suffered on your behalf. He left you an example so that you might follow in his footsteps. 22He committed no sin, nor did he ever speak in ways meant to deceive. 23When he was insulted, he did not reply with insults. When he suffered, he did not threaten revenge. Instead, he entrusted himself to the one who judges justly. 24He carried in his own body on the cross the sins we committed. He did this so that we might live in righteousness, having nothing to do with sin. By his wounds you were healed. 25Though you were like straying sheep, you have now returned to the shepherd and guardian of your lives.

1 Peter 2:13-18
13For the sake of the Lord submit to every human institution. Do this whether it means submitting to the emperor as supreme ruler, 14or to governors as those sent by the emperor. They are sent to punish those doing evil and to praise those doing good. 15Submit to them because it’s God’s will that by doing good you will silence the ignorant talk of foolish people. 16Do this as God’s slaves, and yet also as free people, not using your freedom as a cover-up for evil. 17Honor everyone. Love the family of believers. Have respectful fear of God. Honor the emperor. 18Household slaves, submit by accepting the authority of your masters with all respect. Do this not only to good and kind masters but also to those who are harsh.

1 Peter 2:11-12 (Common English Bible)
Dear friends, since you are immigrants and strangers in the world, I urge that you avoid worldly desires that wage war against your lives. 12Live honorably among the unbelievers. Today, they defame you, as if you were doing evil. But in the day when God visits to judge they will glorify him, because they have observed your honorable deeds.
“Master the Mind”
Lifepoints:
-
Taking the next step is “dependent” on one “determining” who they are. (I Peter 2:9-10)
-
Disciples defeat the enemy of a life given to Jesus with the decisions they make (“in their mind”). (I Peter 2:11-12)
-
Disciples accept and embrace their status in the world as “immigrant” and “stranger”. (I Peter 2:11)
-
Disciples “avoid” worldly desires rooted in individualism, and pursue “God’s intended destiny” centered in community. (I Peter 2:11-12)
-
Disciples “discipline” themselves to “live honorably” (I Peter 2:12)
-
Disciples turn being “defamed” into a “doorway” for others to become “disciples”. (I Peter 2:11-12)
Key Point:
Disciples “depend” on “Jesus”! (I Peter 2:12)
Action Steps:
- "Place" yourself before God's "word" "routinely".
- "Plan" times of prayer "purposely".
- "Practice" loving others "regularly".
Additional Scriptures:
- 1 Peter 2:9-10
- Matthew 28:19-20
- Romans 12:1-2
- I Corinthians 12
- Philippians 2:1-11
- Mark 8:31-38

11-5 Dear Theophilus, in the first volume of this book I wrote on everything that Jesus began to do and teach until the day he said good-bye to the apostles, the ones he had chosen through the Holy Spirit, and was taken up to heaven. After his death, he presented himself alive to them in many different settings over a period of forty days. In face-to-face meetings, he talked to them about things concerning the kingdom of God. As they met and ate meals together, he told them that they were on no account to leave Jerusalem but “must wait for what the Father promised: the promise you heard from me. John baptized in water; you will be baptized in the Holy Spirit. And soon.” 6 When they were together for the last time they asked, “Master, are you going to restore the kingdom to Israel now? Is this the time?” 7-8 He told them, “You don’t get to know the time. Timing is the Father’s business. What you’ll get is the Holy Spirit. And when the Holy Spirit comes on you, you will be able to be my witnesses in Jerusalem, all over Judea and Samaria, even to the ends of the world.” 9-11 These were his last words. As they watched, he was taken up and disappeared in a cloud. They stood there, staring into the empty sky. Suddenly two men appeared—in white robes! They said, “You Galileans!—why do you just stand here looking up at an empty sky? This very Jesus who was taken up from among you to heaven will come as certainly—and mysteriously—as he left.” 12-13 So they left the mountain called Olives and returned to Jerusalem. It was a little over half a mile. They went to the upper room they had been using as a meeting place: Peter, John, James, Andrew, Philip, Thomas, Bartholomew, Matthew, James, son of Alphaeus, Simon the Zealot, Judas, son of James. 14 They agreed they were in this for good, completely together in prayer, the women included. Also Jesus’ mother, Mary, and his brothers.
