SERMON NOTES
I. The invitation is about God’s generosity, not our deserving.
II. Our excuses don’t excuse as well as we hope they do.
III. We get to choose our part in this banquet parable.
FOR DISCUSSION AND REFLECTION
- Complete this sentence: At an all you-can-eat buffet, you'll find me rushing for the: 1) entrees, 2) salad bar, 3) desserts, 4) exit.
- This parable is Jesus' effort to correct some bad behavior He's witnessing at a dinner part where He is an honored guest. What types of unhelpful posturing can you identify in Luke 14:1-14?
- The master in this parable gives no specific occasion for the feast he's hosting. Would it matter to the guests if it were for a specific reason? Should it matter?
- What are some ways we try to excuse ourselves from accepting the Lord's invitation today? Are these acceptable excuses?
- What's one way you can be more like the servant of the parable this week?
- What is God saying to you through today's scripture?
